Introduction
Before we begin, covering every Madness bootleg is impossible, but we’ll hit the highlights and work down. Exploring known recordings and the scarcity of some releases still eludes and is fascinating.
Let it be known that one way or another, we are all bootleggers. We will learn later the difference between a bootlegger and a counterfeiter; by the end of issue four, you will understand why you are one, too, as it is common for fans to be overjoyed with new works from their idols; it’s equally normal for hardcore fans to share their love of the studio recordings, live concerts, unearthed demos, alternate versions, even posters, badges, magazines, news clippings, almost anything that may be covered by copyright law.
You may not understand copyright law, but you don’t have to be a lawyer to understand the basic rules. If you didn’t write or create the work, you don’t own it and have no right to copy, sell, or distribute it anywhere; it’s pretty basic and common sense.

Bootleg Madness is a fascinating and informative read. Like previous issues, #4 is well researched and full of photographs of Madness artifacts and memorabilia. I can say that I have learned a great deal about the history of copyright and recording! A highlight of this issue was the article showing Darren Bowen’s own mixtapes and bootleg from many years ago. Excellent supporting contributions by Andy C. as well.
